How long can previous registar refuse a transfer?

I guess my title says it all. I'm helping a client move their domains all under one well organized roof, but one of the previous registrars keeps denying the move and on each request, just pitches the client with another discount price.

Is there some law and order available here?

Wow, that's annoying, tedster. Normally, the current registrar passes along an authorization request to the primary owner contact for approval.

If this isn't happening, I'd try calling the registrar by phone - I've had good results in the past when I've run into glitches in transfering.

What you need to look at Tedster is that most registers these days have your domain locked by default. They also can make it hard to find out how to unlock the domain.Look carefully esp if the register is enom.
Also registers are prevented to transfer domains within 60 days of the domain being registed.
Hope this helps.

It sounds like they're stalling 'til it's too late to transfer. It can get to a point when you have to strong-arm and promise to file an abuse complaint with ICANN.

I think you're right -- 60 days would be this coming Wednesday. At any rate, things are getting stranger and stranger. The WhoIs databases I access show the domains are moved to the new registrar, but thje new registrar says they are not.

Looks like one of those days coming up on Monday. Thanks for the input and the commiseration.

Ah, if the 60 days isn't up that's different. It may be that they turned loose of the paperwork but the official transfer can't actually take place until the 60 days has fully expired.
