Domain name registration

I'm about to sign up with a hosting company. I also need to do a domain name registration as part of the signup procedures. What are the advantages or disadvantages with domain name registration directly from the hosting company (midPhase.com) or doing the domain name registration with a more well-known registrar like Register.com or Directnic.com?
