A friend has a site registered with register.com and is using their DNS server (I think he might be running his own server though).

His site and the register.com site have been timing out for at least the last 16 hours. Anyone else seen this?

I've hosted with a few companies (NetSol, Godaddy, a couple that went out of business or got absorbed). Basically, I haven't seen any difference between NetSol and Godaddy besides price. I've heard Gandi(?) is really good.

Anyway, opinions on register.com?

News on why their site has been down so long?

I would get away from the as fast as possible. To my understanding, they just changed hands recently (within the last couple of months) and I've heard from 2 other people that their service has turned very crappy. My friend and I had a few domains registered with them and when they changed hands, the online account manager was moved to a different site and it took us weeks (more like a month) to get the proper login needed to access our domains. So needless to say, I moved my domains away from them pretty quick after that. I can't say much about the down time, but considering how poorly they have been acting lately, I wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot pole.
