I am interested in tracking historical whois information... there is the archive org guys but that is only webpages...

There are 2 services that I know of:

[openaccess.dialog.com...] (click on Domain Names)
[w...] h o i s.sc/ (after becoming a Silver Member)
(remove spaces)

Neither is 100% complete, though.
