Maybe, but they mention charging tax. Also, they have no domain forwarding/masking options. I was just looking around for the cheapest possible registar. Assuming you are interested in a .com/net/org, [hostway.com...] at $6.95 a year looks to me like the cheapest and most desirable registrar. If perchance you are interested in a .biz or .us domain name, godaddy.com has those at $4.95 a year.

And, I just noticed something about hostway.com. While they allow new registrations, they don't allow transfers unless you already have either one domain name already with them, or have a domain hosted with them. As such, if you already have a domain name and are looking for the cheapest place to renew, then [ev1servers.net...] looks to me likely this is as cheap as it gets at this moment.

Also, anyone who is price conscious about domain names, yet has a favorite but not too cheap registar they already use or know of, registering with, or transferring a domain name to, these really cheap domain name sellers for 9 years, and transferring it after 60 days (an ICANN requirement is that newly domains can't be transferred for 60 days; this may also be true with transferred domain names) to the better and more expensive registrar with a 1 year renewal is a strategy to consider. When a domain is transferred, the time paid for with the old registrar is honored.

I bought one on ev1 (ui is a bit tedious on the back button) .. came to 7.09 with tax. Lets you lock them, didn't see anything about private domains.

How about if you start buying in bulk? Like, say 10 domains? What's the lowest cost then?

1&1 internet ([1and1.com ]) sells domains for $5.88.

Thanks,

Cost shouldn't be the critical factor when determining which Registrar to use for your domains and in an industry where the difference between a mediocre and an outstanding Registrar can be as little as two or three dollars, why should cost top the agenda at all?

Hidden costs are just that - hidden. 1&1 may offer incredulously cheap registration but try requesting support - they don't have enough staff in place at this time to cope with the customer take-up of their offer. Try transferring away and dealing with the delays that this entails.

Service, functionality, support and reputation are four factors that should top the list.

That's not to say a Registrar offering discount domains is a poor registrar; but there's more than just the initial cost implication to consider.

ritch... right on!

Been doing this a long time and have found that trying to save $3/year on a domain is not such a blessing.

I'd rather pay $8.95 and get service than $5.95 and get abused.

Sigh. Do we really need a lot of support from a registrar? I think of the 30 or so that I have purchased I have never had one support issue.

It's a database entry folks. They are facilitating a database entry. Do you honestly see a need to be paying 29.95 for a database entry?

I am looking myself for a place to transfer 2 domains that I have. I want to have a private registration, that is, no personal information viewable at whois.com. Any suggestions appreciated. I have had a bad experience with godaddy, so I rule that particular one out.
Thanks.

blaze,
You are right about the $29.95 being too high just to justify any additional support, BUT if you are talking $8.95 with good support and features VS $5.95 with nothing but a headache -- Why bother trying to save $3/year.

Not at all, but for the several hundred critical domains I handle, paying $10 per domain, per year, to a registrar who provide round the clock support (important to me - I'm in the UK) and manage to sort things out first time, every time, is a wise move.

Each domain can be broken down to a database entry, yes, but just like a database things can - and do - go wrong from time to time; it's important that should this happen, the backup is in place to help out.

I should point out that I'm in no way criticising the Registrar you mentioned early in the thread, just illustrating that money isn't necessarily the critical factor here.

[registerfly.com...]

"PROTECT YOUR PRIVACY WEEK - Sale Ends 3/31

"Order any number of ProtectFly protection packs for only $.99 each
Block spammers and marketers for less than $1.00!"

They are an enom reseller. I have found them to be adequately competent. $6.99 per domain to transfer; renewals $8.99 a year.
