Back in my early days of web development i trusted my hosting company to register the domain name.

However since then we have transfered to a new hosting company but our old hosting company still has the log in details to control the domain name.

What Can I do?

I have contacted them for the log in details so I can re-register the domain. However I am unsure if this can be done for example I am not a reseller.

I have never registered the domain names myself always trusted the hosting companies to do it, however I need to take control of all aspects of all my domain names.

Our domain expires in three weeks so I need to set myself up properly so i can renew and buy domain myself.

Advice much appreciated.

I think you're too close to the renewal date to transfer the domain to another registrar. You should renew through the old company for one more year and then transfer it to another registrar later.

I was able to transfer a domain to Network Solutions with under a week left on it.

As long as the domain name is in your name and your admin contact details are valid you should be able to transfer ok.

Depends on the current registrar's policies then. I work with a few that don't let you transfer within a certain period of registration/renewal.

The hosting company registerd the domain through TUCOWS in the whois info it says that our hosting company can be contacted with regards to renewel.

I just want to take control of it myself instead of having to go through my hosting company.

Do I have to set up a special account with TUCOWS or should I just expect the hosting company to give me the log in details for the domain so i can renew?

Sorry newbie to domain names!

When you do a WHOIS search on your domain name, what e-mail address is shown for the 'administrative contact' and is it one to which you have access?

No, its the email address of the hosting company, we have instructed them to renew the domain for the next 2 years once that is done we will then look at transfering it so we can look after it.

It is to late to transfer it now as the company is very slow hence the reason why we transfered to a new hosting, I look forward to the day we don't have to deal with them again.

Now after its renewed who shall we transfer the registrar to. I develop many sites but have always gone through hosting companies to register domain names, however I am reaching that level were I will have many domains to manage and need to have them under one roof so I have complete control.

Who to choose for registration and/or hosting is an eternal 'how long is a piece of string' question!

As we've our own nameservers and host everything in-house, all we need is a company to purchase the domain names through and for this, BulkRegister have continually been excellent.

Others will have different suggestions - it's a subject that's been covered quite a bit previously, so the site search should throw up some useful threads.
