i got call in the middle of the night last night that website i am dealing with now is pointing to the same palce as www. this morning i check and fair enough www is going to the right place and one without www. is going to the competitor. so i called up a hosting company to tell them to change this and to see why, when and who did it and they told me it is because last weekend they were under DOS attack. Considering that I can't prove anything since I have no acess to anything I told them to come up with better excuse next time.
My understaind is that somebody did this who has acess to dns config files. Am I right? Should I blame the other guys where my website was going to? I don't think it's their fault.
Please let me know

If your hosting company has suffered a DOS attack and made some counter-measures i'd say it was them (your host) that had messed things up while restoring to normal. They should be able to fix it.
Your competitor (similar domain name?) is not likely the one behind this, as doing a thing like that would be too obvious. Most likely it's just a typo somewhere, at least that's my best guess.

Interesting all the websites that are in the same industry hosted with them point toonly that website.
I would seriously consider finding a new host. This was not a mistake based on your comments above. I would be looking at the host and their association with the competitor that the sites were pointing to.
They did change it right away but i wonder how long it's been like that and how careful i have be from now on.
Did they change it for all the sites that were pointing to the competitor? Or, did they just change yours. Sure sounds like something fishy is going on.
Interesting --- my site is actually one of the few sites that actually requires the www part --- without the www it my url doesn't go anywhere.
luck,
