Some basic questions

1st time I'll be doing this, so I wanted to know -- can I register a domain, with say - GoDaddy, and then host it elsewhere right away?

If so, what information will I need?

GoDaddy seems to have the best prices on domain registration, but I understand they have problems with Google if you host with them -- so I'd like to do that elsewhere.

Any info would be appreciated.

Yes you can register the domain wherever you want and then host wherever you want.
First register the name, then get your hosting package. your hosting company will give you the DNS numbers you need. Now go back to the registrar and change the DNS for your domain to the ones you get from the hosting company.
Give it a couple of days and it will be working just fine.

Can you recommend any good hosting companies that are relatively inexpensive?
This is just for a blog right now.

apw420, if you live in Canada or the USA you can get free hosting for 3 years at 1and1.com until January 14, 2004 (*cough* I'm obviously not affiliated with them).

Only allows 5GB bandwidith, so it's really only useful for smaller websites, but it may work for you... I set up my personal website at 1and1 and it seems pretty good for $0. Guess they're trying to break into the North American market.

Also, as mentioned by others you can definitely register your domain at any registrar and host it elsewhere. In fact I highly recommend -not- registering your domain at a hosting company since this can lead to problems with renewal or if you wish to leave them in the future for a different host (since the domain is handled by them). Not always the case, but best to have the domain under your control, since it's an asset you'll be putting a lot of work into.

Along with the Domains, we also offer the budget hosting services available through Wild West. Please note the keyword in the first sentence of this paragraph, budget.

Budget hosting is appropriate for some. It is not appropriate for almost any serious business or high visibility/traffic website. Most assuredly not.

Whether GoDaddy, Us, or Another Wild West Reseller, the hosting provided on these servers is featurless, offer very little storage space for files, offers extremely little bandwidth, offer no global internet backbone connectivity, and are actually connected on a slow network where the server call times are slow in response (high latency which hurts in Google as well as other search engines).

This type of budget hosting should only be used for family sites and professional profiles that don't need to earn high traffic numbers or provide quality site visibilty. As such, it is especially useful because it offers easy to use new/novice/intermediate website creation & builder tools. It can even start out a small business. But it should not function as a high-profile website simply because it doesn't provide any advanced functionality or connectivity.
