I'm a web designer for small businesses. One of my customers who had a page 1 google ranking for "blue widgets" for about a year dropped by the hundreds about 2 weeks ago which has thus killed her business.
We are currently building reciprocal links because it seems like her highest competition has tons of links to them.
She is also considering getting a new domain with one of her keyword phrases in it. I need to know what is going to help and not help or even hurt her.
Can I copy her existing site and just change the home page to be optimized for a specific keyword phrase such as "blue widgets related" and then have all the other pages exactly the way they are so that I'm not creating a completely new site and look? Or is this bad and considered sneaky and can it get her banned?
Or, do I need to create a whole new site with lots of pages each optimized for a different keyword phrase such as a lot of search engine companies are doing.
Am I right to assume that it is not good to just create a optimized home page, put it with a different domain, but then point to the original web site pages?
All advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Kim

Welcome to Webmaster World.

Sounds like your customer's site got caught in the effects of Google's "Florida" update.
I need to know what is going to help and not help or even hurt her.
Before making any decisions about new sites and domain names it might be best to find what Florida did and how it affected other sites. There are many, many Florida-related threads on the board, but the one that seems to have settled down to serious analysis is this current one:

Reading through that should be a good first start as to what you and your client should consider as your sort through the options.

Thank you very much. This helps a lot. I just re-optimized her home page this past week. I don't think we've overused her keywords. I just checked and she is now showing up on the second page of results for "blue widgetss". This is good news. Of course, the first page is what we're targeting but at least she's not hundreds of results away. Just so you know, this is the site: snipped
