When using my favorite whois "x", the record indicates:

Record update date - 2002-07-02
Record create date - 1998-09-28
Record will expire on - 2003-09-27

However at the top of "x" interface (parses the raw output of the whois?) it says:

Created: 28-sep-1998
Expires: 27-sep-2004

"y", the registrar indicates (which is obviously where "x" gets this info):

Record updated on 2002-07-02
Record created on 1998-09-28
Record expires on 2003-09-27

And internic suggests:

Updated Date: 28-sep-2003
Creation Date: 28-sep-1998
Expiration Date: 27-sep-2004

So... who do I trust? (PLUS the domain status is ACTIVE)

it seems like the domain has been renewed and your "y" has not updated.Check the "whois" with the registrar that holds the domain

"y" is the registrar who holds the domain

Ok then .If "y" is networksolutions then its normal for them to reregister it for 12 months and give themselves back a credit if the owner does not renew. So the other registrars have picked that up but "y" is showing the real situation.
If "x" is networksolutions then the situation is the same. They automatically renew the domain (as they are the guardian of .com and .net domains)and if its not renewed they give themselves a credit. So either way the "y" is the correct info.
Thats my guess.:)
Of course if the domain is neither .com or .net and "x" and "y" is neither networksolutions then I have wasted your time and mine.
