I have been trying to nut this out with my host, but we keep on misunderstanding each other, so I'll ask it here.
I have a domain, say gidget.com from godaddy.
I hosted it at freewebs. I used Godaddy's name forwarding so gidget.com retrieved everything from freewebs.
I now want to move my stuff to a paid host. Better uptime and statistics. I already have a domain there - widget.com. I am allowed 3 add-on-domains, and multiple sub-domains. I've already used up all my add-ons. So I have created a subdomain named gidget.widget.com and have moved my stuff there.
I will probably do a lot more of this in the future - more subdomains with my paid host. More domain-names from godaddy.
Q1: Currently, I am listed on google, but the name at the bottom of my listing is the freewebs address. How can I change this to my domain name widget.com?
Q2: I was advised to get godaddy to turn off name-forwarding, and to update godaddy with the paid-host name servers and to create an add-on domain. But I've already used up all my add-ons. (Tears hair out here).
So assuming I use the forwarding to tell godaddy to retrieve from gidget.widget.com when people type in gidget.com, would that work? Or is that going to give me the same old problem of having google display gidget.widget.com instead of gidget.com?
Q3: Re Q2, do I also need to update the dns address at Godaddy? Or is that why they keep telling me to use an add-on instead of subdomain?
very frustrated.
