Hello everyone,

I recently instaled windows 2003 server, talked to a registrar about registering a .pt domain, and did it.

I all ready have the server working as a primary dns server.

Now they are asking me to have a secondary dns server!

And I only have a range of 4 static IP wich are all taken ( 2 are reserved by the ISP and one for the server and the other for the router ).

What can I do now?

Can I use my primary dns server as secondary dns server for the same domain?

Can anyone help please?

Thank you all in advance for your attention,

Nuno Luz

do a search on google for "secondary dns", you will find lots of interesting stuff.

In short,
yes you can use your primary DNS server as the secondary. The only condition is that the IP Addresses of the Primary & Secondary servers cannot be the same.

As long as your DNS server responds on both IPs to name lookup requests, you'll be fine.

Like Moltar says, do a search on Google and you'll find pointers as to what you need to do.

thank you for your attention, bur one of the questions I have is: since I only hava 4 publiic static IP's, wich are taken, wich IP should I give to the server?
should i have more static IP's?

Also do I need 2 NIC's for that?

thank you again!

As I pointed out to you what to search. Since you are from portugal you might maybe had different results than me.

I was hinting on free DNS services. Or Secondary DNS exchanges. You can run only one for yourself and someone else will run secondary DNS for you. And you will run secondary for someone else.

Also there is free service - granitecanyon. You can try that. If offers free primary and secondary DNS.

If you can't find any - sticky me, I will be glad to help you.

Good luck!
