Expired Domain

But I can't buy it...

There exists a variation of a domain that I own that someone else has registered, and it gathers a bit of my traffic. Whois records state that its current registration expired 7/1/03. But, if I try to register it I am told it is not available. Whois shows a registrar in Australia.

So, why is this? Does it take time for whois records to be updated when a name is renewed?

It could take up to 80 days for name to drop after it expires. It goes to redemption period and later to "pending to delete" period. If this domain plays any importance to you, I suggest to use drop catcher to get the name.
