is it compulsory?

I tried sending an email to a major Australian bank but it got bounced mack as "no such recipient".

Am I right in thinking that any domain name has to have a default email address [e-mail] by law? Or is that just for .coms?

since we're dealing with the world-wide-web here, I doubt there's any world-wide-law to deal with this.
I'd avoid doing business with businesses that could'nt be contacted though...

I believe that the only "obligatory" email address is "postmaster@" as a matter of fact. Info is not required, although it is the defacto standard.

However, can I ask was "[e-mail]" just a typo? Because that is a malformed address for most servers. I think you meant: [e-mail]

There's no such law. There are RFC-mandated rules about having postmaster@ and abuse@ addresses (perhaps the closest thing to a law on the Internet). I specifically avoid having info@ addresses for my domains because spammers tend to love them.

Actually I just killed our info@ address because all we were getting there was spam. It's definitely not a requirement.

We have a catch all (non-directed) address. When someone has nothing (or at least once a week) to do we sit them down to sift out anything good.

That's a good idea for a punishment. Must remember that the next time it comes to disciplining someone ;-)
