I've always been curious to some of the whois database response I get back when querying domain names.

For example:

1) *** This Registration has been SUSPENDED ***

--Not sure what this mean really - but it often happens after domains have been detaged for a while--

2) DETAGGED

--When a domain is not re-registered by the ISP or individual, but the ISP or individual have the 1st choice to register again be4 anyone else--

3) No match for "somedomain.com"

--Pretty obvious--

There are other which I can't think of at the moment, but my intrigue lays with "DETAGGED" and "*** This Registration has been SUSPENDED ***" responses. a) What is the typical time for a domain to be released for registration to the public. b) SUSPENDED results mean?

Any feedback appreciated, Thx.

Suspended .uk domain

If the Registrant of the domain name no longer wants the domain - or hasn't paid the renewal - the registration is cancelled and the domain will become suspended.

The domain is (in theory) cancelled six to eight weeks after it has become suspended.

Detagged .uk domain

A detagged domain is one that is no longer hosted across two valid name servers, hence doesn't work. By detagging the domain, your host is no longer accepting responsibility for it and should not be liable for renewal fees - if you don't renew with your host, chances are you'll end up being detagged.

There's some useful information here [nominet.org.uk] on the Nominet site.

As for 'What is the typical time for a domain to be released for registration to the public' - there's no specific timescale as this would defeat the principle of 'first come, first served' Again, there's more on Nominet's site.
