We are launching a website hosting service where as a part of signing up, we are offering our users a free domain name. Our sign up period is for 6 months, but the domain name registration will run for a year.

Because there is a 6 month gap and not everyone may renew, I was thinking of registering the domain in the company's name. That way should the user not renew, we can just redirect the domain to our home page.

Can anyone tell me if other companies do this, or if they take a different approach? Also once the renewal period comes up, do you charge the user to renew and if you do, do you then transfer ownership over to them?

It seems like what we want to do flirts with becoming a reseller, but is not quite there.

As a final question, has anyone know of a registrar that has a good API for a single account registering multiple domains all the time rather than the traditional reseller API?

BulkRegister or DotRegistrar are good for this purpose.

Also I would suggestion doing free one year renewals, then you transfer the domain into your account and the year is added. New names with websites is really bad. Most people have a name if they want a website hosted.
