Detagged Domain

Surely I don't have to pay Nominet £15 + £80

A client has asked me to "rescue" one of his domains.

It seems in the earlier days when he was less clued up he registered a domain through some company (hes not sure who)

For whatever reason, be it invalid contact info or whatever, the domain has been DETAGGED without any notification before hand.

So i though, easy contact Nominet and pay the £15 quid to get it retagged with my registrar.

Not so, it appears that the domain has passed its renewal date (hence why it was DETAGGED i guess) and so they want £80 to renew the domain before they change the TAGS

This is crazy! if i wait until it drops off, i can re-register it for a measly couple of quid. What justification do they have in charging £80?

I have contacted my registrar to see if they can re-register it using my clients well established account with them. ie account info matches domain reg details.... but as yet no reply

Any ideas what other action i could take? And do you think Nominet should be able to do this, they kind of have us over a barrel, cos if we don't pay, we have to go with an in-active domain for weeks and then risk losing it alltogether..

Thanks

Laisha

Is this the sort of thing you're talking about?

Greater competition would occur if NSI, now a division of VeriSign, was required to release the names and the accredited registrars could let companies and users register them.

davemarks,

No your wrong the client (registered owner) needs to get it retagged £15 + vat

Then he's tick the box which say's that the new ISP will pick up any outstanding debt's the maximum is 1 years fee £5, most Tag holders like myself should not charge for this but included it to their costings

When the client contacted Nominet they told him he would have to pay registration fees to them of £80

I'll have a look, thanks DaveN

someone else might just grab it when it drops.

£80 is the official renewal fee isnt it, so if its detagged, maybe thats what the situation is.

And you might as well wait for a blue moon as for Nominet to release a detagged domain!

Thats great, thanks DaveN

I was a little aprehensive, as I didn't want to say yep ISP pick up fees and then find I'm still picking up £80 or some figure near that ;)

I started an application myself just to see. Although I've done these before I did not remember seeing the option you mentioned, however there it is ;) Just need an application number of some sort form my registrar now, guess I'll have to sit tight for 24 hours or so until they reply :(

Thanks again Dave

The £80 fee is only applicable if the Customer has no new host and wishes to real directly with Nominet - if they already have a new host in the wings they can elect to have them pick up the fees, aka £5.
