I tried it with things like car and computer and it seems to work but not with www.www-keyword.com

Just to clarify the reason I put it in the Google section was that I saw it in an ad when doing a search at Google.

Actually it's not strange at all. The www in this case is simply a part of the registered domain name. Want one yourself? Go to your registrar and order www-keywordofyourchoice.com. It's the hyphen which makes all the difference :)

but why would you do it? it seems a true waste of time.
nobody thinks that - is . an in a confused manner types www-google.com
if they are confused, they'll do www-google-com and still be screwed

It is just a way to get a short name emphasizing the keyword. As a bonus you do get people searching (not entering a url) www keyword ...
Not a complete waste of time but not far from it IMO
