I have recently tranfered a domain (co.uk) from a free UK ISP to a host that offers a whole lot more. I want to be able to find out when it will expire so that I dont lose it. This may be a dumb ass question. Sorry ;)

Done WHOIS:

Relevant Dates:
Registered on: 20-May-2000
Last updated: 26-Mar-2003

Is the last updated the one I need to know. I need to find out, but it does not tell me how log it is registered for.

TIA

As .uk domains are leased from Nominet in blocks of two years, it's probably safe to assume that since this domain was registered on 20-May-2000, it was renewed for a further two years by the tag holder on 20-May-2002, so will be up for renewal on 20-May-2004.

As for checking the specific expiry date though, I don't believe you can with a .uk domain.

The last updated field simply shows when a modification was last made to the record and has no bearing on the expiry date. The date in this field will probably be from when you switched to a new host and the domain's IPS tag was changed.

Best way to go is to simply ensure you don't miss any renewals from your host, as non-payment will most likely end in your domain being detagged and loss of service. Even if the domain is detagged however, Nominet will still write to you and ask you to confirm whether you wish to keep the domain or not - unless the domain has been registered incorrectly, it's quite difficult to lose a .uk domain unintentionally.
