Hi

I'm wondering if anyone can help me with this small query ... I'm thinking of hosting my websites on my own servers, so that I can register my domain names on them etc

Does anyone know what the basic steps involved in this are, and what is involved to become a registered ISP

Any suggestions would be great.

Regards,

Well, if you want to become a registrar - you can forget about it. The requirements are way too tought.

If you just want to run your own DNS servers, then buy a domain, designate a few hosts in that zone to be name servers with that registrar. And then you can offer DNS service to other people.

you want to register your own domain?

first join a reseller program at any domain registrar .

then using their Reseller API you can register domains from your server or website.

its not that tough to get a reseller id.
some registrars need prepayment and some allow you to pay as you register domains.
you do need to use their reseller contract and deposit some funds in your account before you can begin.

it all depends how many domains you are going to register.

Well, yeah. I'm not actually talking about being a reseller.
Heck, I resell for bulkregister, if that's what your are talking about.
It's the same thing, you just get a better deal and easier domain management. But you are not a registrar.

I was talking about actually becoming a registrar. That's not easy and costs a lot of money.

Hi, and thanks for all the replies!

I've a small number of sites that provide a service, which each site individualy catering for each different customer. Currently the sites are hosted on my servers here, and the web sites registered with the likes of 'Demon' and 'Iomart',and they point towards the servers.

So when you type in www.blahblahblah.net you get redirected to our servers at [###.###.##.###...] (which appears in the address bar)

I'm wondering how I go about the ability to bring everything inhouse, so I can register the domains etc for new customers and not have to worry about going through other companies?

Does anyone know the likely costs, procedures involved? etc

Also, I have my company site which is currently been hosted by 'inetc', I would like to bring this inhouse and host it on my own servers etc ...

In short, I would like to be able to bring everything in-house and become a registered ISP, but just for the purpose of been in control of sites I develop (domain names etc)and been able to easily maintain my own company site locally on a server in the office.

I hope I made some kind of sense (probably not) and any feedback or links to other relevant information would be great!

Get an account with bulkregister. That will cost you around $50 (not sure how much they charge now). You can register domains with them and manage them in any way you want.

After that, register a name server (or a few) for one of your domains.

Then, setup dns software and assign your box to be the primary dns server for the domains you are going to register.
