Too many hyphens = bad

Is this true?

Can you have too many hyphens in a domain name?

I'm not necessarily talking about who-what-why-widget.com, but something like double--hyphen.com. I never see any of these types of domains in the serps, so are they specifically penalised because SEOs target these types of urls, or is it just that there aren't so many of them around?

Yes, the double hyphen is even more qustionable then the word hyphen word hyphen word hyphen word hyphen dot com names.

Imagine being on the phone, Yes the website again is blue hyphen hyphen widgets dot com, yes I said two hyphens.

I don't think double hyphen names are very legit.

Cool site note, Technically you can't have a double hyphen domain name in the 3 and 4 positions of a domain. This is forbidden by ICANN so they can do not ascii domain names using some encription tricks.

Hi Lisa.

The reason I ask is that I want a domain with a double hyphen, but not for any particular seo purpose (they won't be keywords), but I would still like the site to be returned by search engines. Do you think I would be penalised just for the double hyphen even if everything else is OK?

Sorry, I didn't understand what this meant. Do you think you could make it a bit simpler for me? :)

Yes, I do think you would be penalized.

And the example is ab--widgets.com, there is a hyhpen in the 3rd and 4th character.

I wouldn't say instantly penalized, but definitely redflagged.

I don't see ANY reason why you would want to do this. If it's for SEO purposes, there are much more effective ways to go about it that aren't harder.
