some-domain-name.com has been expired since early january and I have been patiently waiting to snap it up once it is made available.
How is it that it can be placed on hold for so long?

I believe they (ICANN) extended the "Expired" phase - the domain becomes available when it goes to the "Dropped" phase.

I'm not sure but I think the "holding" period is up to a year now (after it expired)? Is that possible or am I wrong to assume that?

no not a year.... But close.
1-45 days later the domain will be cancelled by the orginal registrar. Then wait 30 days for the previous owner to reclaim it. Then wait 5 days, and boom. It will be available again.
So between 36-81 days after it expired.

I just found a domain I could use "on hold", If it takes a variable amount of time for availablity, what is the best way to watch the status of this domain?
