Transerring a domain from reigstrar $$$ to Registrar $

How far out does one start to be safe

The domain name of the NFP site I now take care of was registered in 1998 for a 5 year block and expires in 6 months, give or take a week.

The current registrar charges over 25 a year for registration only. Other sources now charge under 10 annually for registering a domain.

I can't think of any reason to pay the higher rate. Because it's an NFP site, every dollar I save on domain name can be used to help send a lad to camp, etc.

So two questions:

Is there something I'm overlooking that should make me be more cautious about moving the registration from NetSol to godaddy or another discount registrar?

Should I expect difficulties, games or shanaigans in what shold be a straight forward process of selecting a different company. Some posts here make me wonder if I'm going to have such a problem I should start now and not wait until 30-60 days out.

wise idea to start now, with NetSol anything that can go Wrong, will go WRONG.

just make sure you choose an Icann registrar direct rather than a re-seller, and preferably someone with a track history.

Enom seem good, as do Joker.com (although the interface is a nightmare) to manage.

Start now. Particularly if you're using godaddy, as they add a year to the registration which offsets the cost of the transfer. I expect other registrars are also providing a similar incentive, but do not know for sure. Worth checking into before you commit.

I've recently moved over 100 domains from netsol to godaddy, some of them are very valuable domains and, believe me, I understand your apprehension about putting them "in transit." Glad to say, all of my .coms and .nets are safely locked away at godaddy now. Next, I'll go for the .info batch.

I did have an account already set up at godaddy, and I also had previously tried bulk transfer (50+) which NS rejected. I would recommend setting up the godaddy account first, even if it meant registering for a secondary domain. Get that godaddy account information exactly word-for-word, matching the account information at netsol. I mean everything, the owner, the admin, the billing, right down to the same punctuation.

Netsol will require you to confirm the transfer request within three days, I believe. Unless you are online and receiving email (remember to turn off your filters) during the weekend, it may be better to launch the request on a Sunday or Monday.

Thanks to both of you for the tips. Just another reason that, while I'm not e-commerce and I'm not making my living on the web, I'm sure glad this place exists.

Before coming here, it never crossed my mind that changing registrars would be anything more than a simple 'thank you for the renewal information, but we're going to go with someone new' process.
