Many people here feel that an ODP listing gives sites more weight in Google then any other link. If you get listed in a cat that has a PR of 2, with a lot of listings, will it still give a site that boost?

korkus2000,

I would guess PR is PR - even for ODP.

Check with the sites listed in that category how they are doing with PR.
I have seen sites with a PR1 listed within an ODP category with a PR2.

The reason why many believe an ODP listing gives an extra something could be threefold:

1. Next to being listed in the DMOZ/ODP directory you also get a listing in the Google Directory for that category. It could be/or not, who knows?, that thereby you are credited with two links for the same listing. For DMOZ cats with a pr of 4 or higher you will see both show up with the Google backlinks. To check if Google has indexed the link from a lower PR ODD cat use Alltheweb.

2. DMOZ/ODP categories can have a relatively high PR of 6 or 7 for example. For many sites such a link from a PR7 page will be the highest Pageranking link they ever obtained or will obtain. The moment Google updates and recognises this link they see a jump from e.g. a PR of 2 to a PR of 4/5 to their index page. This mostly will also give them a jump in rankings and visitors, hence the effect many give to DMOZ.

3.Many other directories just list a site with the company name in the link.
ODP's link (the title) can carry possible important keywords, next to the company or site name (depending on the editor and the cat).

The problem with that theory is that Google does not get it's results from spidering ODP, it comes directly from the RDF dump, which is just raw data with no PR attached. Also, most pages PR6 or higher are top category pages, and the vast majority of sites will be listed as subcateries of that.

Google has never really said how much, if any, influence it has, aside from just the single (presumably) in the RDF dump gets you listed in the directory, and therefor spidered. Bartelby.com has around 720 incoming links from ODP, the main page is PR8 - but I suspect it would have a high rank with our without it, since it shows up in Alexa as one of the top 2200 sites ( out of 6,000,000+).

This is not entirely true. Google uses the RDF dump AND spiders the categories.

It's not how many links, it's the PR of the pages that link to you.
