ODP 'Cool' Awards / super-quick inclusion

... I was amazed!

Having had submissions to ODP take quite a few weeks to bear fruit, imagine my surprise when the (hobby) site I submitted got included in well under 24hours!!

I received an email from (I assume) the category editor, advising me of the inclusion, plus notifying me that its got a 'Cool' site award :)

Apart from meaning my site appears at the top of the category listing (with a star next to it!) will I gain any other benefit from it - does Google et al rank *any* inbound from DMOZ the same or maybe give a 'cool' site any more gravitas?? (he hopes!)

I've always wondered how one applies for the 'cool awards'..how do you do it?

There is an option there saying: Mark this site as cool. That's it.

You don't "apply" for a cool site. The editors decide upon review whether they are or are not cool.

Asking for a site to be cooled is usually counterproductive.

The other way to be marked "cool" is to be the official site for whatever the category is.

Thanks Laisha.

I was wondering if I missed some check box somewhere... :)

Congrats on the cool award, you don't see that very often.

Believe it or not, I had mine included within 24 hours too.

I was shocked after waiting much longer for my last site to be added.

I was editing in a category a few months ago just as a new submission was made. The webmaster must have been really surprised to be listed in under 10 minutes.

Unless a site has been submitted to the wrong category, most delays are simply waiting for an editor to pass through. That can be anywhere from zero :) to a long time :( I'm afraid.

More (acceptable) volunteer editors would be good for both ODP and the webmasters.

The short answer is "no", I'm afraid; users of ODP data can choose to use or not use the 'cooling' facility, and none of any size do use it. Most (like Google) have their own ranking systems.

I disagree. A cool site gets prominent placement in the AOL directory, and seems to get better treatment from Google.

Sorry for double here - in AOL the site will be listed as "editor's choice".
