The ODP doesn't "update" as a search engine does. Both its search function as well as the counter on the front page are run by two gerbils in a wheel. When the chief engineer doesn't feed those gerbils right, or sometimes when he just looks at them the wrong way, the numbers will temporarily get out of sync. As the gerbils are quite some grumpy breed, this has happened approximately every other month for at least a year now.

Nothing to worry about, really! ;)

Search database last UPDATED on: Mon Apr 8 18:28:53 PDT 2002 (: Is what I see at the bottom when I search for something on DmOz.

The reason the site numbers go down is that sometimes the gerbils get confused or rebellious, and run backwards.

The "updated" tag just means that our search program indexed the newly-entered sites. Unlike a search engine, we don't have any page rank to change.

How often is the search database updated? We got listed 2 days ago but aren't searchable yet.

Just wondering.

If you try to do a search, noting comes up and it tells you to try GOOGLE.

What's this about? and Why Google..

That's a good question WebSpinner. I just had the same message when I went to check to see if a new site had been entered in the directory.

Too much happening these days to keep up with it all ... I'm still reeling from the April Fools Day "joke". Maybe the gerbils got ticked off with people messing around in their cage and decided to snack on the data!
