Take Edmunds for example. It looks like they make most of their online bucks from affiliate programs with financial companies - car loans insurance, etc. Not only are they listed once in ODP, but rather extensively. Looks like 88 listings. In order to get the advantage of one or more directory listings in ODP with the goal in mind to make affiliate income, content is needed.
IMHO, you need a lot more content on your site; stuff that is not about pushing people to sign up for some kind of financial service, but that someone might find useful, something unique that makes your site stand out from anyone else who could compile the same bunch of affiliate links in a similar fashion.
You could have articles on dealing with credit, credit card problems, issues to consider when refinancing a home, stuff like that. It would need to be very well done, the editor would have to find it useful.
Obviously not everyone has the resources of Edmunds, but the content to affiliate ratio ought to be as close to that as possible.

As pointed out you need to take a different approuch and play down the affiliate stuff, it may also help to make the site fit in smaller browser windows, no more than 800x600 for DMOZ, imho.
