Hi,On one particular category a competitor is topping the list in as far as ranking is concern. Numerous attempt had been aired by our colleagues through DMOZ but nothing was done about it and it was learned later the Company in question were notified instead of being banned or booted out from DMOZ, manage to cut loose of the too many repeated words in meta tag, keywords, etc. I believe it is what is called "Spamming" specially when you have more than 10 words repeated in keywords, meta tags...This category did have an editor but at present it says on the bottom page "this site needs an editor". And the same Company for some reason went back with the same technic they did prior. We were told that this was NOT THE FIRST COMPANY but what I or the association I represent in this industry would like to find out is what or who should we write that once and for all they do something about it quickly when lots of us couldn't get in this category or another for almost a year now. The rule should stand singly for everyone and there shouldn't be bias...etc, or better yet conflict of interest or favoritism..I could very well email the Company in question should someone from DMOZ read this. Furthermore, another Company did the same thing from keyword to the last minute part in that site, and submit and yes they were decline from DMOZ and when they did asked for a reason they were lucky to receive a response of the "Spam", plain and simple! Yes these are facts, and to this date as I write this the site is still there!

NOTE: there are thousands upon thousands of e-commerce from a small scale to big Corporate one's. The same small Companies are the once that makes the economy going, and yet month after month they need to pay merchants account, shopping cart to say the lease..to make business through internet. Put it this way I mean you can acquire bus. license, permit, authenticating your name, bus. name, domain name, you name it! Have it done in a month alltogether and yet most of it are dealt with in government offices noted for as being slow in every aspect.

ANd here we are with this obstacle, no one can question what or who or when with anyone in DMOZ. Except be polite, be courtious.. while lots of people are just praying for hopes, I mean a month or 3 weeks to get your site be reviewed by an editor! I mean go to Pakistan, So corrupt but undeniably you see progress after a month..

These are the facts and who ever is running the show out there maybe misunderstood what is at stake here, AOL and the rest can only survive and provide good legit service to millions of people once people sees features and for instance in specifics what they can buy and see thru a search engines, imaging for a second that no one can't find anything except a few informational tidbits, theoretically speaking these guys from DMOZ wouldn't even be there given this scenario. Which I doubt if there is any governing factor which oversees problems that arrises or scrutinizes complaints from every angle or the service of each editor contributions.

Most of us here runs a business for years now and to hear they are short handed to review etc.. is not good enough reason! If it does not work then try to levy a more constructive approach and if it doesn't still work then it should be presided with another one better. And so far, it has been years of hearing complaints after complaints and nothing is done. If there is! would anyone tell me the difference 2 or 3 years ago that is significantly and substantially different then and now in DMOZ. "Nada!"

The credibility of each site being reviewed are not just merely keywords, metas and what not!, but a great deal applies as well to conceptuality and integrity of each site, etc. Now my question is, does anyone from DMOZ knows anything about advertising or have at least an adv. degree, and not just be an editor because he or she knows that field or an expert. Why??? Because we did assign a department and later applied many many many times but numerous times too got turned down flat and this department comprises of educated advertising degree holder personnel much to add the fact they have represented the industry for decades. Two good pointers here; knowledge of products and ability to sell them, web engineer designers..(Personnel meant there are 15 in that department and none got in) Now tell me who knows what or who?

Lastly, who ever reads this ..the Industry I represent is one of the sought words in the internet and by far we have about 5 thousand small Company's and the list you will find in DMOZ is nothing more than 30.. I decided to write this after holding on for quite a bit, and we have thousands and I do not mean 10 that are discontent. This is relatively an issue against DMOZ and we have not heard not one bit from any as far as Google, Altvista and the list goes on!

Forgive me for saying this, but in this case "Humans don't do it well". If anyone would like to dispute this, then we respect your opinion but would like you to attend or better yet cordially invites you to our next convention and get bombarded by there profound disappointment. I respect the few men and women who works diligently and doing great service to DMOZ. But unfortunately your good service are over shadowed by more misfits or undersirable ones or in short who has there hidden agenda.

basically go up the directory structure of the category that you have complaints about, and you will eventually get to an editor, who will respond. This place isn't really for moaning about the ODP, to be honest with you.

The ODP isn't biased, or least as far as i am aware should'nt be. The web is a very fast moving entity and with all things that grow, they need to mature before serious order is sorted out. As with your concerns of the other companies site, you may find it has been in the ODP for a long time, and has a lot of links from other sites in the same cat, or from cats above or below.

Slowly but surely the ODP, as far as i am aware is striving to stop spam, in any form, but it takes time.

Yahoo and LookSmart will review your site for just $299. You can submit 100 pages to several pfp search engines for around $1800 each. Go get 'em.

I've had one problem submission out of 131 (just counted). Compare that with about 115 acceptances out of 1700 submissions to yahoo.

ODP rocks here.

To add to Caine's reply...if the category you're listed in is as large as you say, logic would dictate that it's a very competitive category and numerous sites are added daily for review. If there is no one particular editor for your category, the submissions get lumped in the the next higher submissions, etc. This leads to an incredible backlog for editors to sift through. Add to that people asking questions, filing complaints, etc. and you're looking at a nightmarish workload.

Also remember editors are volunteers. Whether they're experts in their field or not, they're not paid and do DMOZ editorial work in their (possibly limited) spare time.

My own particular experience with DMOZ has been nothing short of spectacular, both in highly competitive categories and in ones that are less so, editors or not.

Time and patience need to be exercised when relating to DMOZ...you may want to spend some more productive time optimizing for other engines while you wait for things to flush out.

You need to take this up with dmoz.org

Mr. Mackin...you're making us "long winded" members look bad with your short, succinct, to-the-point posts. Stop it.

TC_MAT, the first rule is alway to look within. I surf in the main with JS off, if it is the site I think it is then no wonder it <hint>bounces.

Nffc, thanks but the site you might have seen have been acquired by us and now on the process of being deleted for good. And for the rest we express our apologies.

Other sites in this industry are doing quite good in other search engines, thus far even with Yahoo.

Before us, complaints went thru the right channel (DMOZ)but unfortunately the site in question remains there but two were banned quickly in Google.

Again, we apologise!
