MSN works this way:

- First listings are from their featured sites (paid)
- Second listings are from Overture (paid)
- Third listings are from Looksmart if there are matches (paid)
- Fourth listings are from INK (paid and unpaid)

The way I see it, the more refined your search, the less you will see Overture and MSN paid listings, and the more INK results you will see. 3 and 4 word searches tend to have less of the paid listings, while a general 1 or 2 word search will usually have them.

Thanks for responding. I understand the order that they are listed what i meant was the order that they display the looksmart results. Thanks.

They way to find out is just to submit different things, text, observe, and come up with your own hypothesis. Keyword in title is better than description but aside form that it's probably anyones guess.

Who controls the featured sites (#1)? Is that looksmart?

Thank you.

I think it's MSN, who controls it right?
All there own sites, and sites that they have partnered up with etc.

"Who controls the featured sites (#1)?"

sites published by MSN affiliates, partners, sponsors, and advertisers

In other words... M$ own Sites or Sites that Pay MSN Directly

Thanks Seth!

I guess that leads to question #2; how do I pay MSN directly for that position? Is it through bcentral?

I do believe you would pay VERY MUCH!!! and you would need to have a famous site.
You can read about it if you click on the "ABOUT" button near the futured sites.

I would say go with something else.

You don't need a famous site you just need a thick wallet :)

If you budget is under 40K you have to deal with bCentral (banner ads.. auto submits etc..)

If your budget is 40K or over you can have one of their reps talk to you about feature sites and such by filling out the following form..

MSN Search uses title and description from Looksmart, even for results from inktomi.
With the new Looksmart PPC system ...

1. If I choose the minimum $15 monthly budget, will MSN use the L$'s title and description even when my L$ listings is temporarily down due to budget overdraft?

2. Does L$ listing somehow influence results taken from Inktomi?

"will MSN use the L$'s title and description even when my L$ listings is temporarily down due to budget overdraft?"

Too early to know for sure.. But I would probably have to guess no.. (except for the Ink listings)

"Does L$ listing somehow influence results taken from Inktomi?"

Inktomi crawls the L$ database and uses the L$ title/description for any sites that are in both databases. The biggest influence would probably be a slight link popularity boost..

Why would someone who does internet marketing for a living want to use bCentral's Submission service?

Websurprise, you are right in your assumption that almost everyone in Internet marketing would rather do away with working with bCentral and their submission service......use Ink and L$ instead.
