Out of nowhere hits on - web marketing - start coming

Totally out of the blue from AOL

Once in a while a visitor will arrive on the phrase - web marketing - most of the time I can't figure out why. All of a sudden a site rocketed near the top of AOL for that phrase. Not quite sure what brought it about, didn't try, and it's never been there before. Something major changed in the algo, or maybe they are in the middle of an update, just shuffling results. Anyone else notice a big change?

They shuffle results on a regular basis without rhyme or reason (that I could find anyway). You'll likely drop like a rock in a couple of weeks. Make the best of it while it lasts.

Yes same happened to me a while back - I lost the position after about two weeks - was nice while it lasted :)

Also, there is serious click popularity involved on AOL. Length of click time is also important.

Thanks for the tip Brett! It doesn't seem like that would have brought this particular site to the top, cause it really doens't get much traffic from AOL in general. Does click pop play as much importance as it does on YAHOO!?

Unless maybe AOL is serving it up from cache, then it could be getting a traffic without showing up in the referral logs

Brett, is this a new development? It didn't seem to be an important factor before (in the SERPS I monitor). However, AOL's been acting weird for the last month or so, so I'm not sure if this is part of the change.

Yup, enjoy this ranking while it lasts because AOL will likely drop it about 100 spots out of no where any time now. I was #1 for "web design" at one time, then I dropped about 80 spots out of no where, then came back up about 30 spots, then back down, etc. etc. all without any changes, just AOL rotating results for some reason. Most recently I had the #1 ranking on aol for the term "weight loss" but that has dropped too, then came back up, then dropped, then came back and right now I have lost track of where it is, somewhere in the 20's or 30's I think, who knows.

My stat's program's AOL referral graph sure does look funny though, lol. =]
