Doing primarily UK promotions, I haven't spent much time looking at about.com

Would anybody care to venture how important they think about.com is for the US audience?

% of traffic? etc? user demographics?

any info, no matter how general would be appreciated!!
:)

At the risk of sounding biased here, although I do have many clients who work w/ About.com sites, I'll throw my $.02 (actually worth more like $.10;) in:

About.com can be a killer source of highly targeted traffic, whether you get a free listing, use Sprinks or Advertise (or do all three) - although it depends on what topic you are trying to promote, since some Guidesites are far more popular than others.

About's users tend to be dedicated readers, coming back often for information approved by guides. In this sense, if you have a product or service a guide can give a favorable review to, that can be an enormous traffic generator.

Also, most of About's traffic comes through search on Yahoo, Google, MSN, & other engines - the different sites fair well in search rankings because of the quality & depth of their content, so someone looking for your product might come to an About site first, but then see your specific site.

hope that helps.

We received a steady but small stream of traffic from one guide site that featured a few prominent links to my employer's site...

Then the guide site was shut down by About. :( Guess it didn't bring in enough advertising revenue... but I would imagine that a more popular About site could be a very worthy traffic generator.

Likely, but it could also be that they folded the topic into another, similar site or joined two similar topics. Check around for another link opportunity- i'll bet you'll find one, as many guidesites overlap in certain areas.

:) The actual site guide was the one who told me about it. He was told there was insufficient revenue. I don't think there's *quite* enough content overlap to justify folding "Alternative Energy" into "Pollution" anyhow...

yep...those industry sites are hard to fit.. i have several industrial manufacturer/supplier clients that I would love to list on those, but just can't seem to make it work.
