I received a mail today advertising a directory called WNDP. Could anyone kindly explain what this is, and why it has turned up? Could this be a disgruntled member of ODP? Thank you for any USEFUL information that may result from this post :)

Got one too - they may be worth checking out every six months or so but I get the impression it's been created by an ex-ODP editor who has more time on their hands than they know what to do with.

It is the work of a disgruntled ex-ODP editor who has in the past year threatened a law suit, joined and quit the wherewithout (sp ?) directory and continues to bad mouth the ODP in various fora.

Although he talks a good game, he has no sites listed (just see the vast emptiness of 404s), uses gossamer threads which though a good product could not possibly handle anything the size of the ODP and has no financial backing for this *ahem* project.

brownsmurf, I'm not in a position to argue factually on your opinions but can we keep it nice and flame free, please.

My apologies.

I agree that it's not necessary to flame Nick Sahadi, even though I can understand how tempting and easy it would be.

Sahadi's "wndp" appears to be the latest in a string of attempts to reinvent the wheel, so to speak. It doesn't surprise me that he has contacted any number of participants in the forum since he is currently looking for capital in the form of cash and manpower.

Whether or not he has the wherewithall (pun intended :) ) to pull this off remains to be seen, but, I agree with brownsmurf that it is not likely given Sahadi's recent track record.

Funny that his site has almost identical design to ODP, wouldn't he get in trouble for that?

The ODP folks are well aware of the situation and it's up to them to do something or not.

According to the wndp site, "There are 11 links for you to choose from!"

That's it for his entire directory as it sits.

Until he loads ODP data he isn't required to give ODP attribution. As Brett points out, ODP Editors and Staff are aware of Nick Sahadi and will be watching to see when (and if) he ever gets that far. WNDP would have to follow the same enforceable rules in that regard as others who use ODP data.

Although the home page certainly shows little (if any) imagination, I would be surprised if Netscape would find that it infringed their rights any more than dozens of others who use a similar starting page.

I have nothing against him using their design, just curious.
