This is a dark day for the SEO community.
Story here: [msnbc.com...]

Bleak indeed.... but the final outcome is not entirely clear: Will they eventually sell it? Will they just scale it down? Will they leave it in a dormant state? Or will they close it (like Disney/Go)?

Bearing in mind their recent ad investment, it will be a bold move to close it entirely. My guess is that they will leave it to linger (scaled down) whilst trying to leverage the current visitation rate (not sky high, but certainly worth having).

This is indeed depressing though, as for all it's faults, I was a bit of a fan of NBCi and SNAP before it.

in the uk I had never received a hugh amount of traffic from nbci, but still a loss at another SE going, but I think the author of that story has been watching too much star trek >vaporized >eliminated, it's a shame he didn't finish it off with > results will be transported to a superior being and the staff assimilated within the exsiting NBCi collective.

It will be a shame to see it go (if it does shut down). Too bad if anyone wasted their money by paying for promoting their site to the live directory. I always thought it was ambitious for NBCi to even try and get people to pay for a listing in the Live Directory anyway.

Two entertainment sites (Go, NBCi) shutting down within 3 months. Both said 'hey, the programs on our TV networks are great why don't you watch those instead' so people did- and didn't bother clicking on the adverts. They'll doubtless come running back when broadband is ubiquitous but their time is not now.

Meanwhile it seems that NBCi is in desperate need of some more letters.

MSNBC - Successful news site
CNBC - Successful financial site
YAHOONBCi - When all the paper you hold is worthless, what does it matter whose name is on it.

My nbci site has become "broken". Since the first week in April '01 my free members'site at nbci has quit working, to put it simply. The pages will load a page, sometimes three, but then it begins to stop loading the links in the graphics and then the browser will crash. The crashed browser will not function again until the computer is completely rebooted. This only happens on member nbci sites and not nbci commercial sites. It also happens in both IE and Netscape. For me this problem is exclusive to nbci members sites. I guess it's the beginning of the end.
