NBCi bizex

...just had to try one..

ok, call me a sucker for bizex, but I had to try one at NBCi just so I could see what happens. (I think I heard that they don't allow bots to crawl their listings so link pop in other engines isn't going to happen, but I never checked their robots file.)

...but it was a hardcore business oriented site and I thought I might have a chance at ringing the buzzer. I guess we'll see. Anyone with any tidbits of info?

Barren: [nbci.com]

I've talked to a few people who have used it, but for the life of me, I can't figure out why. No link pop gain, very little traffic, and no rankings boost in the directory. So what, now what? Are people expecting NBCI to go through the roof and justify the $outlay?

Outside of the entertainment categories, are there any "killer categories" on nbci/snap?

yeah, I know, that's why I haven't done it... but I think this site is hit or miss... the conversion rate sucks, but the right click could pay everything back easy.

'are there any "killer categories"?' ... I am betting hardcore business from the news spillover(?)

I would not pay for NBCi/Snap because I have not seen much traffic from any of my sites from Snap, even for sites where they were picked by the editor and have good position.

Plus since it does nothing to help Link pop, I would not bother.

Personally, I don't really know if anyone actually uses NBCi as a SE. It's not very good. Something like GO used to be.

I do. Trust me, plenty of people use it -particularly from their co-branded partner pages. I compete on US travel terms and only Google gets close to them in traffic.

I pay the $99 for them. When you consider your $99 will get you an unlimited number of "free hits" compared to how many "free hits" (how much time can we spend for $99) you'll get by optmizing a site for a particular engine, the price is right even if you only get 5-10 referrers per day (at least it's right in my industry).

hmm... I still don't like NBCi. It's not one of the big 8.

Exactly right. Somtimes I wonder if the seniors in this business are reluctant to change. Every business is different but the time has come where reaching for the wallet is going to be part of life on the web. How quickly and how many times do you need to get your investment back is the question.

>>I am betting hardcore business from the news spillover(?)>>

What I am seeing is a Monday through Friday office crowd.
Mostly women. Good conversion rate. I have a fashion Ecom site.

I am also seeing an increase in pacbell.net coming from them. I think because it is the default home page for pacbell. With the increase in DSL and what is going on with the smaller companies, like it or not (mostly not) pacbell is going to be a big player.

Ditto that. Add [qwestportal.nbci.com] and [bellatlantic.nbci.com]

well, it just got in, so we'll have to see.

...looks like a nice description and title but it doesn't rank. NFFC and I watched it this morning like a big fire cracker that went 'pop' instead of 'BANG'.

...maybe it will take a while... or maybe it won't:)

Boy, are we sad. ;)

Being based in the UK NBCi is not really on my radar screen, is there a click thru factor involved in their rankings?

Also, in common with other Bizex type services, do they offer an appeals procedure? Sometimes a hyphen can kill the rank!

So how does NBCi rank sites? I have never investigated, but it might be time to start checking into it.

How do they rank?

There are a few sections to look at
Top Sites
Member-Submitted Sites
Additional Sites
Search Marketplace

Understanding Search Results [home.nbci.com]

"..When you search, NBCi compares the words, phrases and names you enter against all the Web pages in its directory. The more matches NBCi finds for a page, the higher it will appear in the search results..."

Nicer if you include the hyphen in a search for the primary phrase, I'm thinking appeal.

I have had pretty good luck with NBCI. I have been able to get mostly #1 rankings with them and see significant traffic. I suspect it is due to all the cheap prime time TV ads they get from parent NBC TV. They are out to get Yahoo and with all the cheap promotion they can get they may very well do it.

For right now they are also much more flexible than Yahoo as far as changes to listings and categories and respond much quicker to requests.

I think they will become a major source of traffic and recommend to all my clients that they get in now while it is still easier to get the top rankings. Of course submissions must be done right for top spots.

Under the current circumstances, I'd ask for your money back. I'd be very suprised if they said no.

It was a nice try dogboy.

They aren't shutting it down, just buying in outright and taking it back 100% under the NBC banner. They did hold 39% of the stock...
