Make sure there is at least one link pointing to the site, or they won't index you. OPD is your best choice.

What do you mean by OPD? I'm an amateur at this stuff still =]. Thanks.

I have just submitted my site to the ODP. How long does it usually take before they will review my listing? And how long before google will review my listing? Thanks once again.

scberg, there's a specific forum here for ODP and other directories - you might want to review the posts:

Also, here's some excellent, authoritative information on ODP submissions you don't want to miss:

Adding for the benefit of lurkers who might read this: A link in ODP is the most important link you can possibly have on the Internet. Nothing, absolutely nothing, beats it. Adding your url and description there may well be the most significant thing you ever do on the net. Do not take it lightly. Plan it. Think about it. And above all, read the two threads Marcia linked to. The best spent half hour in your life! Plus: Never, ever spam ODP!

rencke, you are right there.

At first itr looks like 'just another link listing'. Until you realize how many search engines take their listing at least partially from odp.

As an editor on ODP, I check my area twice per week. If that's any help. However, I was on holiday a couple of weeks ago, so didn't check for awhile.

There is one for the quote file. I agree almost completely. I think Yahoo is of equal importances, but only about 1% of the sites submitted for free (according to yahoo techs) is every accepted.

rencke: thanks for the kind words. Many of us (volunteer editors) think there's enough evidence that ODP is the best directory to convince any disinterested, openminded but web-savvy bystander. And surely there isn't another directory in the English-speaking world fit to be compared with our non-commercial links.

But as for most important? Yahoo and Looksmart (howsomever inferior and commercial-laden they might be) both get first crack at _lots_ of eyeballs. And in a smaller directory (like Ya'-know-who or LS), each listing has less competition.

And don't forget that, in the broader context, ODP is only the beginning of a serious search engine optimization effort.

i would have to agree that ODP best fits the model of what a true directory should be. about the reviews, i have known some unreviews to get lost in the midst of 1000s for over 2 years. the categories i use to edit when i was an editor at ODP however would be reviewed in one day. for the most part, i also emailed webmasters whose site i rejected.

I agree totally. Submit to ODP is very important. Goggle, AOLsearch value ODP listing highly. Since Yahoo's webpage search uses Google, you get the Yahoo users as well.

About ODP versus Yahoo and other directories. I think that the size of ODP is still very small. I used to hang out at Go guides, and I found that the listing in my area of interest [computer Chess software] for ODP was much smaller than that for Go guides and There are lots more good sites that ODP is still not covering.

Perhaps it's only just for this category. After all, while the editors for my category are helpful and fast, they don't seem very active. One editor is a mac user, but is in charge of the top level category of Computer Chess software. You don't need me to tell you , there are tons more Windows products than Mac , espically for Chess products. While the other seems to be less active.

But to their credit, neither seem to be affidated with business concerns.

I've just submitted my entry , to help out, hopefully, I can get in, despite the existing 2 editors.

I was thinking of joining a lower level category but I figured I knew enough of Computer Chess to help at the higher level.

good luck on getting accepted! i'm not sure if the system is accepting new applications though, my friend told me they're not. you can see if they are by going to the main page and taking note of whether or not the editor numbers go up on a daily basis. they haven't gone up for about 2 weeks i think...35,611 editors
