Dealing with competition for your directory

What is your strategy for competing?

I run regional, industry-specific directory. The directory faces competition from other websites and from printed publications. I'm looking for new ideas on ways to gain a greater advantage over my competition.

The approach to competitors so far has been to add new content to the directory when I see competitors being successful with a kind of content that's weak or missing from the directory.

A second tactic has been to exchange links or ads with the competitor in order to bring some of their audience to my site.

What do you do to beat competition to your directory?

Ensure you have in place something that others don't.

Even if I told you exactly how to do this - you would still have to think of the ideas yourself. And I don't think people are going to tell you their strategies somehow.

There are no secrets - just illusion of ease.
