Dear Rockintom,
We have some exciting news to share, and we want to make sure that you hear it from us first. Earlier today, Zeal.com (http://www.zeal.com) was acquired by LookSmart (http://www.looksmart.com), one of the biggest, best, and most widely-distributed directories on the web.
The LookSmart directory has been built by a team of knowledgeable professional editors. By deciding to partner with Zeal, LookSmart is acknowledging the expertise and enthusiasm of the web community. We're extremely excited that LookSmart has taken this step to combine the editorial and community approaches to directory building, and thrilled that they've chosen Zeal to be their partner.
Zeal's partnership with LookSmart will enable the joint company to build the top directory on the web, with vast reach. Currently, more than 50 million unique web users access the LookSmart directory each month. Community contributions will therefore be seen by millions of people, and top Zeal contributors will be recognized the world over as the experts that they are. The greater distribution will also create a stronger, bigger, and more dynamic community for everyone.
We are also pleased to announce that the "Share your Zeal" charity drive, which was scheduled to end tonight, is being continued for another five weeks. LookSmart is sponsoring this continuation of the charity drive to show that they are committed to Zeal's spirit of community and enthusiasm.
We are confident that our partnership with LookSmart will allow us to grow and improve faster than ever before. While we are busy working on future plans, we would like to personally assure you that Zeal's commitment to having fun, maintaining a vibrant community, and building the best directory online remains as strong as ever.
Thank you for your encouragement, patience, and feedback throughout this process.
Yours truly,
Brian Goler & Kevin Berk
CEO & President of Zeal.com

I have never heard of "zeal.com". Anyone else here know anything about them?

They've apparently learned quite a bit from ODP's experience: they have very clear listing guidelines, and the guidelines seem to cover everything that has preplexed (and still does preplex) ODP editors.
For instance, there is no question as to how one is supposed to list a page on About.com about breast cancer. Meanwhile, over at the other directories, you could call it "Breast Cancer: About.com," "About.com's Breast Cancer Site," "Breast Cancer from About.com" or any of a billion other things.
While ODP has guidelines covering most of the same stuff, those guidelines were crafted over the life of the directory, so that people who never read the guidelines and/or forums march to their own drummer, as always.
Zeal, on the other hand, has apparently had their guidelines in place from the day they opened.
>I have submitted to them a few times trying to gain cheap
>link pop
I don't think you will get any link pop boost from zeal. They cleverly put your URL in the status bar when you mouseover your link, however the real link is an internal zeal one.
Marcia what was the answer to your question regarding zeal and looksmart ? I am too lazy to find and read the press release :)
This represents a good opportunity for "Mom 'n Pop" websites that can't afford the LookSmart listing.
Admittedly Looksmart may well use Zeal only for secondary results, but it has been noted that Ink.(Slurp) is crawling the Looksmart Dir. and also that quite a few of the major SE's are getting their results from Looksmart.
Seems to me that getting listed in Looksmart is a big part of the jigsaw. We wait and see how Zeal is intergrated in to Looksmart dir.
