i am submitting a freinds web site to directories..he sells auto paint..

i heard that when submitting to directories you should stick to about 10 - 20 a month because 2 many links can imply spamming..

anyone have any added info?

Hard numbers are hard to qualify. A sudden jump in the site appearing in directories might draw attention, but it really has to do with the quality of the directories.

Listings in off-topic directories and/or link farms can do you more harm than good. Keep the site and it's links, both inbound an outbound, on-topic and don't hang out where it's off-topic.

I dont think that submission to 10 -20 directories just for the fear that you will get more back links is right.

First of all the directories take some time to review your site

Secondly when talking of getting more links from the directories the more links are in thousands ..... it is not that a hundred links will get a ban on your site ... no way ... this is just for those who get thousands of links in a very short duration.....

I have been using manual directory submission services for my sites and never felt that it has any sort of bad effect on the rankings ... infact it has always been the other way round (rankings have always improved)and also i have noticed my sites going to PR 4 and the only links they had were from SE friendly directories

I never really thought about this as a problem. hmmmm, I suppose if it were 100 submissions per month - could be considered spamming. It depends on the directory itself, for instance I know of one that allows many submissions per url, as part of it's service, but maybe that means the problem of duplicate results (same companies again and again in results).

Good for site owners, bad for the directories - it's one of those questions! Do or not to do.
