I submitted my site over a year ago and no luck gettng listed so far.

The company offers 2 different services.

If I submit the other service to a different category, will that effect my original submission?

It certainly could affect it; the effect would probably be negative.

Editors spend a lot of time weeding out duplicate submissions before reviewing what is left.

You might be pushing your review slot back, not forwards.

This is the way I edit: if I see a suggestion in the suggested-sites pool that is also suggested elsewhere, I simply ignore it.

I'm giving the other editor the first shot at it. If they list it, fine. If they delete it, then (next month or whenever I check that pool again) I'll do my review.

If the other editor takes the same approach (and I know several who do) then nothing will happen until a third editor who likes cruising for duplicates happens by and decides to delete one of the pair.

Of course, that third editor may not be a specialist in the area, and so may not know which to delete. If they leave both, then the suggestion remains in limbo.

Check over at the place we aren't allowed to mention here for how many threads start:
Q: why has my site not been listed after n months?
A: editors have been deleting duplicates...

The ODP (I assume your question was intended for DMOZ) has guidelines to reduce the possibility of extended review times. For best results stick with the guidelines.
