DMOZ listing removed

My English version of my site was removed form DMOZ for some reason, which they don't tell. Can someone give some hints why a site might be removed?

Did you majorly alter of modify the appearance/category/appropriatness of your site? This may be why it was taken down.

We bought this site about a year ago. At that time it was already listed in DMOZ. We changed the site completely, before it was a commercial site selling pills, now it's an informational site. We still don't know why they don't like our site.

After a brief look at your site, I have no idea why they don't like it. It looks appropriate for the category and does not appear to break any rules. Even though the site changed, there may not be a more appropriate category for it.

Dmoz editors are sometimes accused of corruption, particularly in competitive and commercial areas, charges which they always deny vehemently. Try bringing this up on Resource-Zone, and see if you get any joy or a clearer explanation about why the site was rejected. If this doesn't work just move on. Dmoz isn't all-important.

I searched for my first sentence of my homepage in Google:
"The role of isoflavones is widely appreciated and is currently the subject of intense research."

Site 1 is my site.
Site 2 has copied MY content (and a lot of it!)
Site 3 is linking to my site (ok)

Site 2 is in DMOZ!

My site is #1 in all major search engine for "isoflavones", however wants information about isoflavones will find my site and can copy content...

I would suggest if that is your content you contact them and have them remove it... then I might resubmit explaining that someone had copied your content and you had them remove it. I may even post a message in another forum explaining that, but of course these are just suggestions.

Contractor, thanks for your advice! The owner of the other site promised to remove my content, he even promised to give me a link...

I'm still not convinced that they removed my site for duplicate content before doing some search. What else could bother them?

Well gee I can't say, but I do believe after looking at everything involved your site may deserve a 2nd look considering all information available to me. Of course that's my personal opinion after looking at the sites and content involved. If you let me know when the other content is removed I may take a look at it (no promises, and please don't bombard me with stickies on odp matters as they won't get anyone anywhere).

I still think your best bet is to wait until the duplicate content is removed and then make a thoughtful well written message in the "other" forum explaining the situation and being very honest about it (if you have a thread going - find it and use it).

Edited: Oh and a friendly tip. DMOZ or its editors do not take things into consideration such as "My site is #1 in all major search engine for "keywords"".... no-one cares where your site is or what search engines it's listed in. Has absolutely no bearing on being listed in the directory and often shows ignorance to the submission guidelines and I suggest you or anyone else to not even bring those things up. ;)

Huh? Not sure I follow you there... Don't think I've ever seen an ODP editor say anything Google-related here that could be construed as insisting on Google listings.

Agree with motsa - I have no idea where you would get that understanding?

I can say the sites I add on my own to the directory (not submitted) are usually found by my wife (I look at her bookmarks), my daughter (look at hers too), or I find them on various search engines buried 20+ pages deep. I'm a big believer in the "cream" doesn't always rise to the top and that you can usually find some very good info very deep in the search results.

From what you say most probably your site was removed because it was in the wrong category. However, it is probably not completely removed. It has just been moved to another category and it is waiting a review of the editor in that category. Did you try asking on www.#*$!.com? If not go there and someone will check, the problem is you need to also post the URL you submitted to, in which case it does not apply to you, so try and explain what ahppened and put the URL of the category you used to be in.

If you get an unsatisfactory answer in www.resource-zone.com, which is most probably something like "we can't tell you", then go ahead and resubmit your site and wait 6 months to a year, maybe it will get in. Yes it might take that long of you ever get in.

I can't think an ODP editor (like me) would say that a listing with any SE is needed for an ODP listing. You don't have a thread at hand where that happened?

If another site is violating your intellectual property, then you can file a DMCA complaint, in the case of the ODP by using AOL's "Procedure for Making Claims of Copyright Infringement".

In addition, you can file complaints with various other search engines. There's an article with some good links on over at the ODP Public Forum.

If and when you resubmit, make sure you submit to the CORRECT category, especially if the URL has had a content change. You can use the "description" field of the submission to include any information you think is pertinent (e.g. "Note to editor: blah blah blah").

The reason your site was removed was because the DMOZ listing came from a prior owner and you bought the domain.

Believe it or not, although DMOZ editors have no time to add new sites, they do have tools to remove websites that are already in DMOZ once the domain expires.
