Silver wings upon their chest
These are people, the Internet's best
One hundred people will test today
But only three win the Green Beret

[for Green Beret read "ODP Administrator"]. The elect:

bldarter
chris2001
dlugan

mapfan
marisa1116

Congratulations to the New ODP Administrators. The best of the Internet. The creation of this level is the next logical step in the ODP’s evolution toward its self-governing ideal. And the next logical step in the evolution of the Internet toward being an integral part of human life.

Mr Skrenta, the list is as interesting for its omissions as for its inclusions ;)

I would second that. Note that the OP using the quote from the "Green Berets" song likely may be proceeding from a false assumption. Namely that there were a lot of people who desired the position, yet only a few were chosen. The omissions may just be people who didn't want the added responsibility, and not those deemed inadequate.

Skrenta?! Who knew?

The list has been out for a good while, but apparently the ODP sleuths have been sleeping.

Yeah, it was interesting to see all the posts, 2 weeks ago (thread since deleted), about ODP dying, servers going to be killed off, only one 3-hour per week part-timer on the case, etc; all of which were proclaimed as "inside information", and which were all untrue, yet the people proclaiming that "inside information" seemed to know nothing about the new Admin team which had been announced at least month previously. Now you know why many editors avoided that thread.

If only the ODP were as good as some think it is... Its strength is now its downfall. The close knit community is now an exclusive club that has failed to progress.

This might sound like "sour grapes" but this is a fact:

- I am on the internet about 3 hours a day.
- I've been involved in affiliate programs, so I know the good from the bad
- I've worked for the Energy industry for 22 years
- I'm considered an "expert" in my industry

I applied as an editor for that category (no editor), I was told it was too big for a newbie. The category is riddled with poor descriptions. Clearly edited by someone that does not know a holding company from a third party supplier.

I've submitted complaints about affiliate sites, redirects, spam, get the picture? The sites are still there. Very frustrating.

Did you consider applying to become an editor of a smaller category first?

It's hard to fault the ODP for wanting to ensure that editors know what they're doing when handling a large cat, (a separate issue than your expertise in the field). Even though there was no editor, they might have seen it as a case of "better off left alone than mishandled".

On topic: best of luck to the ODP and its new admins... these recent moves are a sign of good health that bodes well for the future.

I applied for a large category too. I was told it was too large, and to gain experience I was admitted to a smaller sub-category. In the meantime I am editor for 3 related subcategories, and a "greenbuster" for a larger category. None of these ever caused a problem, admission was fast and the reactions were professional.

>> I applied as an editor for that category (no editor), I was told it was too big for a newbie <<

The ODP has no idea who you are... they are not going to let you loose on a category with thousands of sites, then check back a few days later to find that you have made a complete mess of things, or deleted the lot (it has happened in the past - and then someone else has had to go in and clean up!).

No, they are going to let you loose on a category with just a few sites in it, and if you do a good job then you can apply for something a bit bigger and work your way up. You might be an expert in some topic, but that does not mean that you are definately going to be any good at editing.

Thats why you get a trial run in a small category, then the chance to expand.

Just for the record, the category has around 150 entries and I did apply to an even smaller category (one with 40 entries) and I got an unspecified reason for decline response.

Maybe it was my write up. I explained how I was involved with the "Internet" before the WWW or browsers existed. You know, the time when you had to know Unix commands and commands like gopher were used.

Perhaps my mistake was to mention that I was an AOL member when Steve Case wrote us emails explaining how they just passed the 100,000 member mark. Back when Prodigy, CompUServe and AOL were the only games in town.

... or maybe not; no-one (aside from the reviewing Meta editor) could ever know that.

BillyS, that may indeed have been your mistake, as you could have seen earlier if you'd thought about it this way: what could it possibly matter to us how long you've been an AOL user? We have editors that aren't even that old!

BillyS: I mentioned my Internet experience (since 1988 - BBS-experience even longer) as well in my application, but it turned out to be a qualifying thing FOR me, not against me.

Have you tried to reapply again? Or for another category?

I said I was an AOL user in the early days, I have not been with AOL in years.

I'm sorry, but I've also reported lots of spam and when I go back it's still there - months later. I can even spot affiliate sites better than most and I see a lot of those too.

I'm not suggesting everyone is no good, in fact I reported a bunch of affiliates in their forum and a moderator removed them almost instantly - about 8 sites - clearly affiliates.

Hey, don't mind me. I'm just a smart guy interested in quality that was turned away for some reason. I'm editing for a couple of other directories instead. I hope I don't mess them up...
