DMOZ categories and search results

Does category effect results?

Hi

Suppose you submit your site to DMOZ for selling a product nationwide and it gets put in a category for that product but in a specific city and state instead.

Will your search enginge ranking on google be effected if you are advertising for the word "products" in general and not just in that city and state? Or does it matter? I am worried that the site would only rank high on google if they type, for example, products New York since that is how it is categorized in DMOZ. Or is DMOZ just a good listing to have regardless of where it is categorized.

Assume all your backlinks say product and do not refer to a specific region of the U.S. Also, your site is optimized for the word products and not just products for a city or state.

I do not believe that the dmoz category directly effects the google SERPs. The category does have Page Rank so different categories will pass on different PR.
