My site is in a very competitive category, and as such my DMOZ category editor has still not listed the site after four months (she hasn't even got round to looking at the site yet)
So.. this obviously affects my Google rankings, in fact the site has hardly been spidered at all.
My question is.. without a large marketing budget, which other directories are important to be listed in? I'm aware of the obvious, such as Yahoo, but are there any vital ones I might miss that would have a decent impact on PageRank etc?
Thanks for your help

I have 7 sites (several of which have been waiting since spring of 03) i.e., 18 months . All are original, well designed, validated, followed Google/DMOZ guidelines and no illegal code.
DMOZ is broken.

I understand that your problem is lack of spidering from SE. If so, your best bet is to go to directories which are heavily spidered themselves. Such directories are frequently visited by bots and that gives you the confidence that your listing will be found. Some places call it 'saturation'.
Good luck!

What a shame DMOZ should have gone commercial so that at least there would have been some money in the coffers to pay for monitoring and bandwidth and growth
Don't get me wrong I am sure there are a high percentage of the original idealists still working hard as dmoz editors who do a terrific job but it only takes one rotton apple to cause a box of apples to go bad and there is more than one rotton apple in this box

My advise is to hold your spirits high and email the editor asking "whatta f...!" (just kidding)
Humans do it better and mess up easier...
Try searching in google and you'll come across small lists of free submit sites. Compile these together and remove duplicates and BANG you can soon have 30 or 40 of these...put in more effort and you can have a lot more.
The trick is to find the ones that are actually useful. For that track the exact URL you want and the day you submit. Then you can use free/cheap tools to automatically check when they've gone live. Then you know which ones work and which ones don't etc..
Overtime your list grows. I'm up to 1400 quality free submit sites. Some are general but most are niche.
Interesting a good place to find some "overlooked" directories is in Dmoz/Google Dir. If they are listed there, links from them are obviously considered quality links by Google.
-> Warning: Many directories that say "free submit" really aren't, but there are just so MANY free submits directories that this doesn't matter. Just keep track so you don't resubmit time and time again with new sites.
