I have never managed to get listed in DMOZ but I am in MUSICMOZ. I understand the two are related so is it a case of they out you in one or the other?
Should I be satisfied with being in MUSICMOZ or should I keep applying with DMOZ? (ive already sent several requests over the years).

And so at the very best the affiliate site can only contain false or non-unique content: it cannot ever possibly have any authoritative true information.
So a site like imdb.com can't possibly have any information worth listing if the producer of the movie actually made a website? How many listings does this amazon affiliate have? More than amazon I'm guessing. This to me is exactly the site that watcher of the skies describes. Something other than the website of the manufacturer which exists to send traffic to amazon, cj, and their premium google account.

Thanks for the info Hutchenson
The only problem is the guy with the 'weird obsession' has to make a buck while he's fulfilling it.
He's not about to go around town selling web based ads while his website is sitting in the sandbox.
You need at least a competitive amount of traffic.
So that's life - until your content becomes as good or better than your competitors then you write for free.
You invest as much time as you can to your weird passion and eventually it will be built.
But while your sitting there with your non-commercial site in the sandbox waiting for DMOZ to approve of your weirdness, you turn to other avenues to generate some 'quick traffic'.
Ok theres this guy that sells widgets on the web. My site has nothing to do with widgets but since my site has a community atmosphere and widgets are very useful to the community (theres a widget in every home), would a banner ad for widgets on my site, in exchange for a 'high ranking link' from his site be a bad idea, or would this constitute 'DMOZ suicide'?

also you said:
"affiliate-tagged subdirectories, affiliate-tagged tags, affiliate-tagged subdomains, links with no visible tags but using cookies or referer."
you lost me completely there.

Whilst I have my suspicions, there is no substantiated proof that a dmoz link will get you out of the sandbox any quicker, and there is (supposedly)proof to the contrary. I have found adwords and overture able to generate enough traffic and exposure, along with new relevant inbound links I search for everyday that I am at least comfortable sending my ex around town selling the web based ads.;)
