OK, so I've submitted to the major directories, but as I understand it, if a search tool has an index too, I can also submit to this seperately. So when I use the Add URL function, does my request go to the directory or to the index or both? If the answer is both, then how do I submit to the index without seeming to be re-submitting to the associated directory from every direction? (ie. Google has an index and uses ODP)Thanks for the help.

Directories generally have a fairly long submission form, asking you to choose a category, give a description, etc. Search engines usually only ask for your URL ans maybe your email address, and they pull your description out of your meta tags and page text.

If you submit to ODP through Google's site, and then use Google's own "Add URL" form, the Add URL form will submit you only to the index.

Generally, when you get to the directory submission page, it makes it very clear which directory you are submitting to. When you go to an index Add URL form, it doesn't mention any directory names at all, and the Add URL submission won't be sent to the directory editors.
