Hi,

I've edited, or at least attempted to edit, in several human-edited directories, and found some directories to be immensely frustrating (systemically thwarting most of my efforts to add sites) and others to be elating (abundant editor support, editorial freedom, pride in a good job done, etc.)

I would like to know if others have had similar differences in their editing experiences.

Who will be first to climb on the soap box?

Have edited at most of the major current and deceased directories that had some volunter component at one point or another. (Zeal, HotRate, GoGuides - the one owned by Disney, Snap (NBCi.com), ODP, etc..)

Found them all to be pretty much the same. Stick to the guidelines, pay attention to titles and descriptions when crafting listings, stay away from self promo unless its kind of encouraged (I'm thinking Zeal) and things run pretty smoothly.

Overall, spending some time on the editor side is a very valuable & educational experience for anyone who owns a website, or wants to help develop an information resource for everyone to use.

Lets leave the specific newbie "directories" out please.

I've edited at several directories from the ODP to even some country level Yahoo cats under 3rd party support. Most have been out standing experiences.

The other 3rd tier directories are not even worth mentioning.

What are 3rd tier directories? Not asking for names, but for definition.

Dmoz, Goguides/Skaffe, Zeal all have been pretty. Editor side you can't beat the Open Directory Project for resources and a wealth of information that can be accessed for all editors.

I haven't edited ODP yet, but I have edited one of its sister directories - open-site.org.

Other than that, I've also gone through Skaffe and GoGuides, and overall it's a pleasant experience.

Forgot about that one, I edit at open-site.org as well, not as much as I would have liked though, to busy to do any serious editing :(
