DMOZ pages with no PR

Does anybody know why a dmoz page would go from pr4 to grey. I see it in 3 branches in our area. Some pages at the same level have PR but other don't?

I'm thinking it has to be some kind of glitch.

Assuming neither the URL or the linkage path changed, it sounds like a glitch. Way back when, some directory pages that linked to "bad neighborhoods" like link farm sites seemed to get PR0 by contagion, but I haven't seen that lately.

PR is distributed evenly amongst the links on the page - if there are a large number of links off a PR 4 page then they won't necessarily each become PR 3. Some categories are @linked from several other categories as well as their direct parent category and some categories get inbound links from external sites, thus boosting their PR. I often link to dmoz categories on forums where someone's requested information e.g. on apartments to let in a particular city - it's generally the most comprehensive list on the web.

Technically, any category where the category path was encoded with any accented Latin-1 character, or which was previously in a non ISO-8859-1 character set, has had a change of URL with the recent change to UTF-8 encoding for the category URLs, and listed site URLs, titles, and descriptions.

This might explain some of those problems for some categories.

As of yesterday, the latest RDF files (2.4 GB in total) have no UTF-8 encoding errors. The UTF-8 project is completed after more than 6 months of work.
