It seems that they have kicked out all of the editors and now you have to pay to edit there. I have not been able to gain access to the editor side for a while now.
IMO the price you pay does not seem to be worth the list of benefits they say you get.

Good point, what editors - there are not any left and also they just paid to become an editor and then they cant access the details for any further updates.
Either
1. You join as an editor - and are a normal footsoldier
or
2. You pay to be a "Submissions Specialist" and as far as I can see can add whatever rubbish you like :)

And, yes, Robert does try to keep the directory spam-free. Does a fairly good job of it, too, IMO.
As for volunteer editors - why would you want the hassle? For the most part it's going to be a 9 to 1 ratio of spammer to legitimate, quality oriented editor.

I used to be one of the foot soldiers, I know a few as well and no one can access.
I'm not an editor at GoGuides. I think I applied once and was accepted but never got around to editing. I'm just a friend of Robert's and I host GoGuides.
After the breakup of GoGuides there was some unpleasantness, and I'm thinking that might be why Robert is hesitant to put the volunteer editors back in. Also, I'm not sure the current scripting supports localized edit permissions. He has been doing a lot of new scripting and might need to get that worked back in. Last I talked to him, he was wanting the volunteer editors back.
He is active in improving the directory, though. He's been working with Links2Go to create a search engine type thing which uses the GoGuides database. Some interesting stuff happening there.

I meant it sounds like it is pay to edit, so it sounds like your an editor to me was meant as a follow up to that comment!

And there seems to be some misunderstanding about the submission specialist program and editors. That’s not an editors program. Its set up to help professional web designers and web developers get their clients websites listed. Editors are restricted to topics but have full control over listings in the topics minus the locked listings. Submission specialist have no control over topics (editing) but can make instant submissions anyplace in the directory.
See the big difference between the two? And what I’ve learned is that submission specialist members tend to submit high quality sites and not spam unlike many volunteer editors that like to drop and run. Submission specialist usually submit sites they have design or sites they have been hired to optimize and promote.
Another thing with submission specialist that people don’t realize. Every single submission they make is logged and checked. If they break the rules they don’t get kicked-out they get a hefty fine. $50 to $100.00 per submission violation that their company is responsible for paying, its in the TOS. And if they grievously violate the submission guidelines their company is ban from ever using the service.
For now we are not taking any new editors because we have what we need to keep everything running smooth. But in time we’ll start taking new apps or inviting back editors that have done a good job and want to keep helping build the directory.
Craig I remember you and the quality of work you did. Your one of those volunteers that are welcome back at full level anytime. Just drop TS a note to get your privs turned back on. For the rest of the volunteer editors they can still submit for free they just have to wait for the listing to be approved. That has always been in place for them and I see no reason to take it away. The only real hold up for everyone is that all the code is still not in place..
I can say this. We are planning to put a hundred dollars in each volunteer editors pay-per-click accounts at Links2go. That amount will go to any volunteer editor active since Oct. 1 2003 even if they don‘t have full access at this time. But that money must be used to bid on keywords and can not be withdrawn or refund. I should be able to tell more about this in the next few weeks...
