I am in the process of creating a directory. I personally hate the ones where you must have a link to them live first.

But that said what is acceptible as a webmaster. Would you submit your email address and validate your email/submission?

What would you and would not you be willing to do.

Cheers

I think as long as I know an email confirmation is required I would give one.
I'm guessing most of us have an email account just for submitting to SE's/directories that could be used.

Feedback about outstanding submissions is a perennial complaint about DMOZ. You've been there yourself:

Solving that problem for your site could be done in several ways:

  • take an email address, verify it, and then send regular status updates to it
  • give the submitter a special URL that lets them query the status of their submission
  • simply have a public page that shows the status of all outstanding submissions.

    >>Would you submit your email address and validate your email/submission?
If any emails bounce back then the site submission is not added to our directory sites

    >>give the submitter a special URL that lets them query the status of their submission
submissions to a small directory are normally checked and verified within a few days, it's only on the scale of dmoz you would have any delay in checking sites (IMHO)

    >>simply have a public page that shows the status of all outstanding submissions.
all new additions are shown on a what's new page

You can have as many submission rules as you want and tell the submitter to check all the details before clicking the submit your site button but the details still get submitted with spelling mistakes, wrong url, keyword stuffing in the title etc. etc.
These are the items which take time to check before you can add the submitted site to your directory.

I have got automatic checks for spam detection, duplicate url's, and check all fields are completed but what you can't have is are the site submitters details correct because each site is different.

i personally run a small directory and say that adding a link back to the directory is optional but will help the growth of the site

i think its silly saying you must have a link back to be accepted for industry specific its not as bad but for general directories its not really benifiting the submitters sites visitors and just kinda kills the directory

as for giving out my email i play it safe and have an email for directories which are not well known to me.

The concept of adding links to sites and directories is to share traffic from other sites. So if you desire to add your link on other sites and directories to drive their traffic to your site, then it is also fair for them to ask a link back so they can also attract your visitors to their business.

No as far as email! how do you expect directories to contact their link partners and customers without an email address? I know some site abuse it but then is there any other solution to communicate with others on the internet without an email address?

Reciprocal linking is very powerfull search engine ranking tool. Most of us dont even realize the importance of this tool. You will be amazed how fast your business can grow with reciprocal linking. I have learnt so much by just visiting forums and reciprocal tool sites.
