For a brief time DMOZ experimented with listing/ranking Websites according to their Google PageRank

That policy seems to have been reconsidered

Curious as to what the results were that lead to their experiment and final re-decision

DMOZ never did that. You have confused DMOZ with Google's version of the directory [directory.google.com] (which lists pages by their page rank by default).

No conspiracy here, please move along.

ODP data is used in over 1000 spin-off websites all over the world.

Some use all of the data, some only a small part.

Some keep it up to date every few weeks or months. Others are showing content which is 3 or 4 years old.

Several have added their own unique way of presenting the data, one of which is Google, but several others also come to mind.
